Aggregators handle dispatch and collect LocalFlex payments, and we pass 50% back monthly. FlexZone does not change your energy supplier or tariff, and the SwitchInsights view is that it works as an income layer on top of a well-chosen tariff, not a replacement.

UKPN LocalFlex location coverage
UKPN LocalFlex covers the London, South East, and East of England regions. Eligibility is checked at the meter level because not every postcode is in a constrained zone. Roughly half of SwitchPilot customers in those regions qualify, and we check your postcode automatically.
Outside UKPN's footprint? Equivalent grid flexibility UK markets are active in the Midlands, South West, and Scotland. SwitchPilot plans to extend FlexZone to those areas from 2027.

You need at least one qualifying smart asset. The asset does not need to be managed by your energy supplier, it just needs to be controllable.

What does a flex event look like? Typically 30 minutes to 2 hours, triggered on 4 hours' notice. For EV owners, the charger may pause overnight charging until after the event. For heat pump owners, the system may be pre-heated and then briefly suspended. Most households notice nothing.

Realistic earnings by qualifying smart asset
How to get paid to balance the grid depends on the asset and event count. A home battery might dispatch 15-30 times across a winter season; an EV charger flexed twice a week adds smaller but more frequent earnings. UKPN pays aggregators up to £600 per MWh, and SwitchPilot passes 50% of the residual back.

What FlexZone is not
FlexZone does not change your supplier, tariff, or direct debit. SwitchPilot's role is origination and eligibility, dispatch is managed by the aggregator, and you can leave at any time without penalty.
SMETS1 meter? First-generation smart meters (installed before 2018) are not compatible with the half-hourly settlement required by LocalFlex. Contact your supplier about a free SMETS2 upgrade.
