The short version

The Octoplus Eclipse Power Down was a one-off Saving Session on 12 August 2026, timed to the partial solar eclipse. Octoplus members who signed up and used less than usual between 6pm and 8pm earned the Octopus 16 August free electricity hour on Sunday, priced against the Q3 2026 cap unit rate of 26.11p per kWh. NESO balancing data give a first read on the solar the eclipse actually cost. Both point the same way: solar carries more of the daytime mix, and suppliers reach for demand-side tools before extra gas plant.

How SwitchInsights tracked this: we combined NESO's solar-eclipse balancing data, Octopus's Eclipse Power Down press release (one free hour on 16 August for Octoplus Saving Sessions participants) and the Ofgem Q3 2026 cap unit rate into one worked example. Our methodology treats confirmed NESO and supplier figures as primary and only models bill impact where no official per-household breakdown exists.

NESO solar eclipse 12 August: how much generation it cost

The 12 August eclipse crossed Britain as a partial event, deepest across the south west and Cornwall, with the sun already low in the west, not at midday. NESO's generation-mix data for the 6pm to 8pm window show solar output falling faster than normal, with the deepest dip - modelled at roughly 0.4GW below the seasonal-normal curve - landing around peak obscuration, small against a fleet capable of upward of 12GW on a clear afternoon.

How much gas backup NESO needed

NESO's contingency planning followed a familiar playbook: extra open-cycle gas and interconnector capacity held on standby. The modest scale of the loss kept balancing actions within the routine evening ramp, no Demand Flexibility Service event was called, and NESO reported no emergency reserve use. A clear-sky eclipse at midday, when solar output peaks, would remove several times more generation across the same half hour.

Octopus Power-Up 16 August: the Eclipse Power Down worked example

The 16 August free hour was not a standard Octopus Power-Up but the reward leg of a Saving Session: Octoplus members who signed up to the Octoplus Eclipse Power Down and used less than their baseline between 6pm and 8pm on 12 August got one daytime hour on Sunday 16 August billed at zero. Non-participants paid the normal rate. Our analysis compares two Octoplus Saving Sessions households on the Q3 2026 cap at 26.11p per kWh: one shifted load into the free hour, the other carried on as normal.

Both rows assume Octoplus Saving Sessions sign-up plus an accepted reduction on 12 August. Households outside Saving Sessions earned nothing on 16 August, regardless of smart-meter status. Within the eligible group, the gap comes down to flexible load: shifting a wash, a dishwasher run or the tail of an EV charge captures around four times the value of doing nothing.

What both events reveal about growing UK solar dependency

The solar eclipse UK electricity grid impact was limited, and that is the point: NESO handled it with contingency gas held in reserve, not deployed, while Octopus ran the Eclipse Power Down as a planned reward, not an emergency measure. How to line up for the next free electricity hour

Octopus Power-Ups eligibility is narrower than smart-meter ownership: a UK Power Networks postcode across the south east or east of England, a smart meter sending 80 percent or more of half-hourly readings, and a separate opt-in per event in the Octopus app the day before, usually for an hour or two when local wind or solar outstrips demand. Octopus Agile demand flexibility households and Intelligent Octopus Go demand flexibility households qualify on the same footing as any other Octopus tariff.
