On 11 March 2026, Ofgem granted Tesla Energy Ventures Limited a Tesla UK energy supply licence covering England, Scotland and Wales - electricity only, no Northern Ireland, no dual fuel (so the question "can Tesla supply gas UK" has a clean answer: no). The Tesla licence approval makes Tesla a fully licensed electricity retailer in Great Britain.
No tariff, price or sign-up date has been announced - but Tesla already owns the generation (Pillswood), the storage (Powerwall and Megapack), the in-home hardware (cars and chargers) and the dispatch software. The Tesla supply licence Britain is the last piece of a vertically integrated electricity business with no UK precedent.
How SwitchInsights analysed this: the SwitchInsights analysis draws on Ofgem's 11 March 2026 licence notice, the Tesla Energy Plan terms with Octopus and the Texas template. SwitchInsights' methodology weights three pillars - generation, in-home hardware, dispatch software - and the SwitchPilot Score rates Tesla's Powerwall integration as the strongest single edge over Octopus.
The commercial logic: a margin Tesla gives away
The Tesla electricity supplier UK licence solves a financial problem. Under the current Tesla Energy Plan, Tesla sells the Powerwall and the software, then hands the customer relationship and retail margin to Octopus. A supply licence turns a one-off hardware sale into a recurring bill.

What the licence is actually for
Tesla has been active in UK energy since 2020. The Pillswood Megapack near Hull (196 MWh) came online late 2022 as Europe's largest battery site. Tesla Powerwall UK households can also join the Tesla Energy Plan, run with Octopus: 24-26p/kWh symmetrical import/export, 45p daily standing charge, plus membership of the Tesla Powerwall virtual power plant UK. The supply licence is the mechanism for turning each of these into a direct-to-customer product:
1. EV charging tariff for Tesla owners
Tesla controls the car and, for many owners, the home charger. A Tesla-billed EV charging tariff is a natural extension of Tesla Electric UK plans, modelled on Tesla Electric in Texas (2022). SwitchInsights' EV tariffs guide covers what a Tesla Electric tariff would walk into.
2. Home battery storage and the virtual power plant
The Tesla Powerwall virtual power plant UK already draws stored energy from Powerwalls at peak. In-house, Tesla sets its own rates and folds compensation into the bill.
3. Tesla grid balancing and flexibility services
Pillswood already trades wholesale and balancing markets. Tesla grid balancing across a domestic supply book adds a second pool of flexible capacity - thousands of Powerwalls and, eventually, EV batteries. V2G is the missing piece: hardware exists in newer Teslas but UK regulatory approval and a compatible charger ecosystem still need to land. SwitchInsights' V2G explainer covers where the UK market stands.
Tesla vs Octopus Energy
Octopus has been Tesla's UK retail arm, billing Tesla Energy Plan customers and running the Flux tariff Tesla Powerwall owners use to save. The Tesla UK energy supply licence suggests Tesla wants that retail margin itself. SwitchInsights' Octopus Energy review sets out what Tesla is up against.
Best for Britain submitted 8,000+ opposition letters over Elon Musk UK energy concerns, but Ofgem rules on financial and consumer-protection grounds, not politics.
When will Tesla launch in the UK?
"When will Tesla launch in the UK?" has no formal answer. Tesla Electric launched in Texas (2022) starting with existing Powerwall and solar customers; analysts expect a similar phased UK approach with a 50-150k household 2026-27 addressable market. A late-2026 launch is plausible - direct-billed Tesla Energy Plan for Tesla Powerwall owners first, Tesla Electric tariff for EV drivers to follow.
The SwitchInsights take
The Tesla Energy Ventures UK licence is primarily a margin play - Tesla builds the hardware and software, Octopus collects the bill. A supply licence lets Tesla collect that margin itself. The SwitchPilot tariff tracker covers what is available to switch to now.
Tesla UK supply licence: FAQ
Can I switch to Tesla as my electricity supplier in the UK now?
Not yet. Ofgem granted Tesla Energy Ventures Limited a supply licence on 11 March 2026, but no tariff, price or sign-up date has been announced.
Will I need a Tesla car or Powerwall to use Tesla's energy supply?
Early access will likely favour existing Tesla EV, Powerwall or solar owners, based on the Texas launch.
Can Tesla supply gas as well as electricity in the UK?
No. The Ofgem Tesla licence covers electricity only and does not permit dual fuel.
When will Tesla Electric launch for UK households?
No date is confirmed. A phased Tesla Electric UK rollout starting with Powerwall owners in late 2026 is plausible.
Tesla vs Octopus Energy: who wins if Tesla launches?
Octopus has ~6m UK customers and Kraken; Tesla brings hardware and the Tesla Powerwall virtual power plant UK - early reach favours Octopus on scale, Tesla on margin per Powerwall customer.
