How is my energy bill calculated?

Your energy bill is made up of two parts: unit rates (what you pay per kWh of gas or electricity you actually use) and standing charges (a daily fee you pay just for being connected to the grid, even if you use nothing). These vary by region - this calculator detects yours from your postcode and applies the correct rates automatically.

The calculator gives you three options: use the default Ofgem price cap rates, enter your own rates from your bill, or pick rates from a specific supplier.

Under the April 2026 Ofgem price cap, the typical household pays around 24.5p/kWh for electricity and 6.76p/kWh for gas, plus standing charges of roughly 61p/day for electricity and 32p/day for gas. If your rates are at or above these, there is almost certainly a cheaper fixed deal available in your region.
